Alabama Football History

Since its start in 1902, when the Alabama Crimson Tide went 4-4 in its first season, the team has carved an indelible legacy in the annals of college football history. It would take 23 years before Alabama won its first national championship. Leading up to that famous 1925 season where the team went 10-0, Alabama had just one losing season, and two seasons where the team went .500 for the year. The program was solid from the start and coached by famous names like J.W.H Pollard, and Tubby Graves. Xen Scott coached for just four seasons, but in that time Alabama had a 29-9 record. Wallace Wade coached for eight seasons. During that time, the team had a pair of undefeated 10-0 seasons. In 1933, Alabama joined the SEC conference.

Their only winless season came in 1955 when coach Jennings Whitworth struggled to get the team in shape. Bear Bryant took over for Whitworth, and it almost goes without saying that Bryant was the team's most popular coach in the team's long history. Bryant's name was used as part of the current stadium's name, a change that was made while he was still head coach. He led the team for twenty-five seasons and 24 bowl game appearances.
