Throughout their history, the Flames have won their division five times- 1986, 1989, 1994, 1995, and 2006. The Flames have also won their Conference Championship three times- 1986, 1989, 2004. Of those three Stanley Cup Finals appearances, they have successfully turned one into a Stanley Cup Finals win, in 1989.
In addition, the Flames have also won the Presidents' Trophy two times- 1988, and 1989. The Presidents Trophy is awarded to the team that finishes the regular season with the best overall record league-wide. The current head coach is Bob Hartley.
The Calgary Flames entered 2018-2019 expecting to have some growing pains as they rebuilt this team from the ground up. Instead, they blew the lid off their expectations, finishing the year with the best record in the Western Conference. Yes, they did go to five games against a red-hot Colorado Avalanche team in round one of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but that should not deter them. They were lucky enough to get near the playoffs a year ago, much less the top seed. But yet they were. So what got them there? Well, a spectacular performance from left-winger Johnny Gaudreau, who led the team with 99 points last season. Finishing second in points was center Sean Monahan with 82. Center Elias Lindholm, considered to be their best player, finished third with 78 points. Left-winger Matthew Tkachuk, son of NHL hall of famer Keith Tkachuk, finished with 77 points, and defenseman Mark Giordano finished the season with 74 points.
For the draft, the Flames held the twenty-sixth selection overall, which they used on center Jakob Pelletier from Moncton of the Quebec Men’s Junior Hockey League. In free agency, the Flames made a flurry of small moves, but nothing to take notice of.
