Chicago Blackhawks 2022-23 Season in Review

At the end of the 2022-23 season, the Blackhawks found themselves in eighth place in the Western Conference Central Division. With a final record of 26-49, it seems that the team took a bit of a slip when compared to the previous season.

Connor Murphy played in 80 games with seven goals and six assists. He spent 69 minutes in the penalty box over his 1551 minutes on the ice. Max Domi scored 18 points and had 31 assists, with 1098 minutes on the ice. Patrick Kane had another great season, with 16 points and 29 assists. He spent 1077 minutes on the ice.

Going forward, Connor Bedard signed an entry-level contract in July of 2023. Taylor Hall was traded to the Blackhawks in June of 2023, in a trade that included Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula going to Boston. Hall is 31 years old and played in 61 games last season.

Blackhawks 2021-22 Season Brings in New Coach

The Blackhawks' final 2021-22 record was 28-42-12, and the team was still in rebuild mode. At the start of the season, the Blackhawks record was 1-11 before head coach Jeremy Colliton was fired. Derek King picked up from there, and the team went 27-33 for the rest of the season. The team leaders in scoring were Patrick Kan with 92 and Alex DeBrincat with 78. The team's early season losses were too much to overcome. The team finished in seventh place in the Central division. At the end of the season, Luke Richardson was hired as head coach on 6/27/22. Luke Richardson was an assistant coach for Montreal. He worked under three different head coaches in the lead-up to his head coaching position. He helped the Canadiens get to the Stanly Cup Finals in 2021, and Chicago fans are hoping for the same effect in 2023. The Blackhawks play their home games at the United Center.

Blackhawks Win Stanley Cup

In the Stanley Cup, the Chicago Blackhawks met the 2011 champion Boston Bruins for the first game between the two clubs of that year. Despite their storied pasts, the occasion also marked the first Stanley Cup series the teams had ever played against each other and the first in which two Original Six teams had met since 1979. The Blackhawks took the first game at the United Center, which went into third overtime but lost the next two in the series to fall behind 1-2. Another overtime win in game four tied the teams at two apiece before the Blackhawks comfortably won game five back in Chicago. Game six at Boston went down to the wire. Two goals in the last minute-and-a-half of regulation saw the Blackhawks come back from a nearly game-long one-point deficit to win their second Stanley Cup.

Coming into 2014 as defending Stanley Cup champions, the Chicago Blackhawks made few changes to the previous year's roster. Forward Dave Bolland, the scorer of the team's Stanley Cup-clinching goal months earlier, was the only notable trade made by the organization during the off-season, and no signings have been made since last November. As of the second week of the New Year, the Blackhawks sit atop the central division with 68 points, 29 wins, and eight losses.

Blackhawks Playoff Run 2013-2014 Season

The Blackhawks had shot to be back-to-back champions when they started the playoffs against the St. Louis Blues. The Blues won the first two games of the series before Chicago roared back to win the next four games. They went on to play against the Minnesota Wild in the Western Conference Semifinals. They took that series four games to two. It was on to Los Angeles, to play the Western Conference finals. The series went to game seven, but sadly the Blackhawks lost in the final game. That left the Kings to represent the West. In 2015, the Blackhawks did make the playoffs. Will the team go on to the finals? Stay tuned.

The Chicago Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and have spent their entire existence in Chicago, Illinois. The Blackhawks have been one of the NHL's oldest franchises, and since their inception nearly 90 years ago, have been one of the most successful.

Throughout their long history, the Blackhawks have won their division 15 times, most recently in 2013. The Blackhawks have won their conference three times- 1992, 2010, and 2013. In addition, Chicago has won the Stanley Cup five times- 1934, 1938, 1961, 2010, and 2013. Also, the Blackhawks have won the Presidents' Trophy twice- 1991, and 2013.

After not doing much since the early 1990s, the Blackhawks began a push in 2009-2010. They hit on some great draft choices like Jonathan Toews and scored big in free agency with Marion Hossa. The result has been two Stanley Cup wins and a host of other deep playoff runs. They are currently in the midst of another one. During the 2015 NHL playoffs, they defeated the Nashville Predators in round one.

The Chicago Blackhawks had a great 2015-2016 regular season. They finished the season with 103 points, tied for the third-best record in the Western Conference with the Anaheim Ducks behind the St. Louis Blues and the Dallas Stars. Due to the NHL's somewhat odd playoff scheduling, the Blackhawks found themselves facing the St. Louis Blues in round one, and the Blues won in seven games. The Blackhawks entered the off-season with little work to do. They feel that they just need to polish up a few things and the team will be contenders once again. Their most notable off-season move was trading their first-round draft choice along with Marko Dano to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for Andrew Ladd, Jay Harrison, and Matt Frazier.

The Chicago Blackhawks had about as good of a regular season a year ago as a team could hope for. They finished with 109 points, good for the top seed in the West. The playoffs, however, were a different story. In one of the more stunning upsets in recent memory, the Blackhawks were sent home early by the 8th-seeded Nashville Predators in a sweep. Entering the offseason, the Blackhawks didn’t have much room to do anything, so they opted for smaller moves, such as signing defenseman Eric Gustafsson to a one-year contract as well as goaltender Collin Delia to a two-year contract. In the draft, the Blackhawks had the 29th selection overall in round one and used it to fortify their back line, grabbing defenseman Henri Jokiharju from Portland of the WHL. This is a franchise that has been one of the NHL’s premier teams for a long time now, and they have the hardware to prove it. One must wonder how long they can keep this up.

It wasn’t that long ago the Chicago Blackhawks were kings of the NHL. The Blackhawks had perhaps the NHL’s best roster and rode that roster to three Stanley Cups earlier in the decade. They look to improve in the coming seasons. The Blackhawks finished last season with 84 points and missed the playoffs for a second straight season.

For starters, they made three notable trades before the draft. Two “regular” ones and one that blew the lid off the NHL offseason before it even started. On June 15, they acquired defenseman Olli Maatta from the Pittsburg Penguins for forward Dominique Kahun and a 2019 fifth-round draft choice. Next, they traded John Hayden to the New Jersey Devils for left-winger John Quenneville. Then the big one.

On June 24, the Blackhawks traded goaltender Anton Forsberg and defenseman Gustav Forsling for forward Aleksi Saarela and defenseman Calvin de Haan. The Blackhawks were considered to be the winners of this trade, but time will tell if that is correct. For the draft, Chicago held the third selection overall, which they used on center Kirby Dach from Saskatoon of the Western Hockey League. Chicago added just two players in free agency, goaltender Robin Lehner for one season, and center David Kampf for two seasons. Later on in the offseason. It is a new era of hockey in Chicago. The fans won’t put up with losing for too long.
