In 2022, the Broncos looked to come back strong after trading away draft picks for one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Their final record for the season was 5-12.
The 2021 Denver Broncos finished the season with an overall record of 7-10, which was an improvement from the year before. The team last had a winning record in 2016. For 2022 the Broncos are making huge moves in free agency and that could turn into success for the franchise. The team had hopes of signing Aaron Rodgers to a contract but came up short. Here’s a breakdown of the free-agent signings for 2022.
Randy Gregory surprised Broncos fans by agreeing to a five-year, 70 million dollar contract, with $28 million guaranteed. Gregory is an edge rusher that gives their 3-4 defense a boost. The Broncos also signed Russell Wilson to a four-year contract, with $95 million in total guarantees. The team gave up two first-round picks, two second-round picks, a fourth and fifth-round pick, quarterback Drew Lock, defensive tackle Shelby Harris, and tight end Noah Fant. If that sounds like a lot, that’s because it is. D.J. Jones agreed to a three-year contract, and will surely be a run-stopper for the Broncos. Jones will receive $20 million, guaranteed, of a 30 million dollar contract that covers three seasons.
2022 looks like a year where the Broncos go “all in” for a playoff run. They firmly believe that Russell Wilson still has gas in the tank, and with the acquisition of some solid defensive players, the team is poised to move up in the standings.
The Denver Broncos were founded in 1960 in the old American Football League. After the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, the Broncos joined the AFC West where they have been located ever since. Since the merger, the Broncos have made the playoffs 20 times, most recently a year ago when they won the AFC. The Broncos have won the AFC West 13 times, once again, most recently a year ago. The Broncos have won the AFC several times, and the Super Bowl twice, both of which came during the later years of the career of the legendary John Elway. In 2019 the Broncos organization changed its iconic name to Empower Field at Mile High Tickets.
The Denver Broncos, who entered 2016 as the reigning Super Bowl champions, finished the season with a record of 9-7, good for third place in the AFC West. All season, the Broncos struggled with quarterback issues, so the retirement of Peyton Manning had a huge impact on the team. The first order of business during this past offseason was to replace head coach Gary Kubiak, who retired for health reasons. Vance Joseph was chosen to replace him. In free agency, the Broncos shored up their offensive line with guard Ronald Leary and offensive tackle Menelik Watson. The Broncos then turned their attention to the draft, and they ended up with eight draft choices overall. In round one, they needed to replace offensive tackle Russell Okung so they grabbed Garrett Bolles from Utah. In round two, they needed to replace the recently retired DeMarcus Ware, so they picked defensive end, DeMarcus Walker, from Florida State. In round three, they selected wide receiver Carlos Henderson from Louisiana Tech, and he should help whoever ends up playing quarterback.
With their second selection in the third round, they chose cornerback Brendan Langley from Lamar. With their pair of selections in round five, they chose tight end Jake Butt from Michigan, a player that fell in this draft. They also picked up wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie from Georgia. They finished their draft with running back De'Angelo Henderson from Coastal Carolina, and quarterback Chad Kelly from Mississippi in round seven. The Broncos have a solid roster, and now if they can figure out who is going to play quarterback, of which all four on the roster have a shot at the moment, we will see what happens.
