The New York Rangers had a solid 2015-2016 season. They finished the season with 101 points, good for the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Due to the unusual format of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Rangers drew the second seeded Pittsburgh Penguins in round one. The Penguins won the series easily in five games, thus ending the Rangers season. New York entered the offseason without any major needs; so instead, they made a bunch of small moves. They extended numerous players and made several trades, such as trade defenseman Keith Yandle for a 6th round draft choice. Basically, management believed they didn't need to do much based on last season. So far this season, management has been right to bet on doing nothing. The Rangers are off to a good start this season, as they currently stand with 39 points, good for the third-best record in the Eastern Conference to this point.
“Solid.” That is the best word that can be used to describe the Rangers a year ago. After finishing the season with 102 points, which gave them the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, they found themselves matched up against the 4th seeded Montreal Canadians, whom they defeated in six games, which seems to be the average for first round matchups in the NHL. In round two, they were matched up against the red-hot Ottawa Senators, and they lost to them in six games. The Rangers had a somewhat busy offseason, making numerous smaller signings, capped off by the pick up of free agent center Mika Zibanejad to a five-year contract. The Rangers did have two first round draft choices though, 7 and 21. They used the first one on center Lias Andersson and the second one on center Filip Chytil. Of the two, obviously expect Andersson to contribute first. The Rangers are back at it in 2017, hoping to break through.
