Badgers Hire Luke Fickell as Head Coach for 2023

The Wisconsin Badgers made a bold move at the end of the 2022 season. They hired Luke Fickell as head coach for the 2023 season. Fickell spent the past six seasons as head coach of the Cincinnati Bearcats. In 2021, Fickell led the Bearcats to the College Football Playoffs. The team's 13-0 record proved that the team deserved to be in the tournament. He took over for the Badgers interim coach Jim Leonhard at the end of the 2022 regular season.

As for the team's performance in 2023, the Badgers finished the season with an overall record of 7-5, with a conference record of 5-4. The team won their first game against Buffalo but stumbled against a non-conference game against Washington State. They took care of business and defeated GA Southern, Purdue, and Rutgers before losing to 20th-ranked Iowa. They came back to beat Illinois and then lost to Ohio State, Indiana, and Northwestern. In overtime, they beat Nebraska. Finally, they defeated Minnesota. The team was invited to the ReliaQuest Bowl on 1/1/24.

Badgers Face Oklahoma State In Guaranteed Rate Bowl

The Wisconsin Badgers earned a spot in the postseason for 2022. They will play in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix on December 27, 2022. The Badgers final regular season record was 6-6 overall. As for their opponent, Oklahoma State had a final record of 7-5.

Badgers Fire Head Coach Paul Chryst

After back-to-back blowouts, the Badgers parted ways with Paul Chryst. In a surprising move, the Badgers athletic director decided that they had to make a coaching change well before the end of the season. The team played terribly against Illinois and Ohio State. They lost what should have been an easy game to Washington State. With six games left on the 2022 schedule, Jim Leonhard was made the team's interim coach. The team responded to this change by blowing out Northwestern 42-7. Badgers fans will have to wait for the end of the season to see who will take over as their permanent head coach.

Badgers Football History

The Wisconsin Badgers football team started way back in 1889. They played just a pair of games that "season." It would be seven more seasons before the Big Ten conference would come together. The team enjoyed much success in those early years, winning three titles in the first decade. Not much is noteworthy for Badgers fans up until the 1940s. Things started to roll for the Badgers in 1942 with their victory over top-ranked Ohio State. From there, Wisconsin found a way to roll over their opponents and win numerous title games.

It wasn't until the mid-1960s that Bucky Badger saw his team hit the skids. The team couldn't put together a win during the 1967-68 seasons. It took the coaching style of Dave McClain to bring the team back to its former glory. That all started in 1981. Wisconsin pulled together enough wins to grab an invite to the Garden State Bowl. Sadly, McClain passed away in the spring of 1986. The football program suffered greatly from the loss. The team would have to wait nearly four years before working their way back to the top of the Big Ten.

For the past 13 seasons, Wisconsin has managed to field very good teams. In that span the team would find themselves Rose Bowl participants five times, winning two. The Badgers tend to focus on the running game, a feature that does well against Big Ten opponents, but less so against teams like TCU and Oregon.

After what turned out to be a rather entertaining battle that lasted for most of 2018, sophomore quarterback Alex Hornibrook won the job. However, he did not have a great year. He threw 15 interceptions and did not show flashes of real talent. This offseason, he will be pushed by former four-star recruit Jack Coan, and don’t be surprised if Coan jumps him at some point. Running back Jonathan Taylor, who was one of the best, maybe even the best freshman in the country a year ago, led the team with almost 2000 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. If he chooses to play all four years and stays healthy, look for records to be broken here. Not just Badger records, but Big Ten and even national records. Their second-leading receiver Quintez Cephus returns for 2018. This looks like yet another great season in Madison.
