The Pistons continued to struggle as a team this past season. Their 17-65 overall record meant that they took last place in the Eastern Conference standings. The team has made trades that haven't helped to improve their standings. Their draft picks haven't panned out. Their losses have meant that free agents have avoided them altogether. Still, there are a few players on the roster that stand out. Killian Hayes played in 76 games and had 470 assists. Bojan Bogdanovic was the team's top scorer, with 1273 points. He had a total of 223 rebounds and 152 assists.
The Detroit Pistons will spend 2022-23 rebuilding their team. With the fifth pick in the NBA draft, the team will start their effort to improve their standing against teams like the Miami Heat, and many other teams in the NBA.
When looking at the Detroit Pistons roster, one would think this team would have a lot better results than they have had the last few years. The three best players on this roster are All-Star caliber players- center Andre Drummond, point guard Reggie Jackson, and power forward Blake Griffin. Yet, despite the talent, the best the Pistons have been able to muster up the last few years are a couple of appearances in the playoffs as the eighth seed and quick first-round exits. Perhaps a lack of support around said players were the problem.
The Pistons had two first-round draft choices entering the draft, allowing them to add a couple of supporting players for cheap. With their first selection, 15th overall, the Pistons selected big power forward Sekou Doumbouya from France. Interesting choice. With the 30th selection overall USC freshman shooting guard Kevin Porter. In free agency, they added point guard Tim Frazier, power forward Markief Morris, point guard Derrick Rose, and power forward Christian Wood. They also added point guard Jordan Bone via trade. So it appears as if the Pistons saw the lack of support as well, and did their best to alter it. All signs point to the Pistons being much better this season than they were a year ago. Time will tell us if that is true.
The Detroit Pistons had an average 2015-2016 season. They finished the season with a record of 44-38, good for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. They were swept by far superior Cleveland Cavaliers teams in round one of the NBA playoffs. The Pistons ended up with the 18th overall selection in the 2016 NBA draft and used it to select the raw but talented Henry Ellenson from Marquette.
Also this offseason, they signed forward Jon Leuer and guard Ish Smith as well as re-signed center Andre Drummond to a five-year, 127 million dollar contract. How have the moves translated to this season? The Pistons are currently sitting at 18-21, right on the outside of the fringe of the NBA playoffs.
