The Memphis Tigers made the NCAA tournament after the 2021-22 season. It had been eight years since they made it that far. The team faced Boise State in the first round and won 64-53. In the second round, they took on powerhouse Gonzaga. They bowed out after losing 78-82.
There are nine retired Tigers jersey numbers that hang in the rafters at the FedEx Forum. They represent the best players to be part of that college program. The first player to be honored was Forest Arnold, who played for the Tigers between 1952-56. Another great player from the 1950s Win Wilfong, who went on to play for the NBA, after being drafted by the St. Louis Hawks in 1957.
John Gunn played from 1974-76. Larry Finch played from 1970-73. He was drafted by the Lakers in 1973, and went on to coach Memphis basketball for twenty-two years after his NBA career ended. Other notable players with retired number include Ronnie Robinson, Larry Kenon, Keith Lee, Elliot Perry, and Anfernee Hardaway.
